The Herald has gone premium and the people are not happy. Several grumpy
readers have contacted me about the New Zealand Herald's introduction
yesterday of its new content policies. Opinion pieces are now "premium
content" and to read them online you'll need to pay: $3 a day or $99 a year.
So the Herald is trying to charge for premium content. Good luck. People have been talking about ways to make "micro charges" for websites work for a hell of a long time, but the general public has always been resistant. In some cases I think it might be easier to start a service off with charging from the get go than switching something to require payment when it's been about for a while.
Either way, for me, I see it as a free content filter. I'd actually consider paying to NOT have to see the Editorial pieces, so having them removed for free is kind of a bonus!
