I'm off down to an out of town conference all next week to act as the technical lead alongside one of our sales guys, the idea being to sell a system we're *about* to build to some other possible clients. The hotel we're staying in looks pretty nice, but unfortunately doesn't have Internet access in the lower end rooms. We'll also be standing around at our trade stand for most of the day, so I figured it was a good idea to setup my phone & laptop via GPRS and infrared as a backup plan, albeit a rather expensive one.
I've done this many times in the past 6 or so years - going back to well before the days of GPRS, when 9600 was all you could hope for, back when I owned one of the very first iPaqs ever released, or one of the very first phones which supported IR, and every time I've configured the various components it's been a real headache. So it was very nice that this time it took all of 5 minutes - technology really is making life 'easier'. A lot of it was down to Vodafone's website - they have quite a neat little wizard type thing which lets you select your phone / PDA or phone / laptop combo and get some pretty decent instructions. I have to say some of the options were a bit unintuitive, and the menu options aren't too well laid out, but in the end I found what was needed.
Anyhow, if you're trying to configure your NZ mobile for use with a PDA or laptop, or just for GPRS on the phone itself, then check out their Wireless portal. The one downer, is that some of the wizards crap out on Firefox, so you might have to switch into IE.
(Feel free to place some benchmark bets on the bill size!)
