New Toy

Just got myself an iPod Shuffle, and it's great. It makes my mini a bit redundant, but I'll still use both I think. The shuffle was released shortly after I bought my mini, which made for some pretty bad timing - if I had to do it all again I'd be grabbing a Shuffle and a full sized iPod, as I think the two work well together to cover most situations. As usual, I'm using Winamp with ml_ipod instead of iTunes, which works pretty well. The one trick is if you happen to have iTunes installed - it will prevent the iPod from showing up as a disk when iTunes isn't running. I'm assuming that's done via the iTunesHelperService or whatever it's called - the thing which sits there leeching 5mb of memory even when it's in an idle state. The only reason I had iTunes on (for all of 5 minutes) was that it was easier to initialise the device and do a quick test using iTunes to make sure it was all up and running before switching over to Winamp, but really if you grab the latest iPod update download from apple, run that, then go straight to Winamp you should be fine.

The size of this thing is great. IMO 1gb is a perfect size for a small device which you carry with you everywhere, and update it's contents often.
